Food & Drink Guide Glasgow
2010
'Breathtaking' is one word
to describe this restaurant, both inside and out.
Housed in the former Sherrif Court building, Citation
stops passers-by in their tracks to marvel at
its grandoise facade of Corinthian-style pillars
and alabaster-coloured brickwork. Situated in
the centre of Merchant City, it is at the hub
of Glasgow's cultural dynamic and an ideal spot
for people watching. The terrace is open from
10am - 10pm daily - perfect for enjoying a morning
coffee or a drink with colleagues after work to
unwind. Alternatively, exploit the unusual architecture
by relaxing with a cocktail on The Portico, a
first-floor balcony which sits behind the pillars
at the front of the building.
On stepping through the formidable
entrance and into the ground floor Taverne, you
find yourself in an impressive yet cosy bar area
complete with comfy sofas and exposed stone walls.
Here you can enjoy a refreshment from the quirky
named 'Wish List' (aka drinks menu), which boasts
an impressive collection of coktails and bottled
beers. Food is served until 5pm and includes table
service, making the Taverne an ideal place for
a relaxed lunch during a shopping trip. Those
who have worked up a large appetite will be suitably
refuelled with a mouth-watering char-grilled steak
and onion doorstep sandwich accompanied by fries,
salad or soup of the day. For a lighter meal,
select from a variety of salads, sharing plates
and bar snacks. Workers need not miss out - try
the express lunch offer of soup and a filled baguette
for just £5.95
As the sun sets, head up to
the first-floor restaurant, which is renowned
as one of Glasgow's finest places to eat. Elegant
Parisian decor, neutral colours and soft lighting
make for a truly relaxed and refined evening.
A typical meal may have you sampling a voluptuous
potato, pea and chervil veloute with crostini
(£4.95), followed perhaps by crisp confit
of pork belly with a chorizo, roasted pepper and
chick pea stew (£11.50), and rounded off
with a wedge of sweet ginger cheesecake with vanilla
roasted pears (£5.95). For a more Continental
experience, diners may choose to delve into a
spread of the finest antipasti, charcuterie and
cured fish with pickles, relishes and fresh crusty
bread. All the while your dining experience will
be made complete complete by the attentive and
friendly service of Citation's 'family' of staff.
Finish an idyllic evening with a nightcap of coffee
amid the beautiful surroundings of the restaurant,
or step outside onto the Portico to take in the
night air.
This stunning venue is apt
for a celebration and, with special menus for
Christmas, Hogmanay and graduations, Citation
caters for a range of occasions. Of course, with
food and surroundings this exquisite, who needs
an excuse to pay a visit?
